Salt Dough Letters
I saw these on another friends instagram page and absolutely fell in love with how bright they were. Salt dough is usually a tan colour, so you can imagine how I jumped to the opportunity to ask about their bright colour. When we spoke she mentioned to just add paint...my mind was blown with how simple that was! So, here I am, writing this up so you can refer to it anytime you like! This is the recipe I used to make the salt dough letters pictured below.
Ingredients
1/2 Cup of Salt
1 Cup of Flour
1/2 Cup of Water
1/2 Cup of White Acrylic Paint
Mix the dry ingredients and the white ingredients separately. Then combine the wet mixture to the dry mixture. Mix together to form a dough like texture, then knead until its smooth. Wear gloves if you don't want to get your hands messy and covered in white paint. I found using my hands was a lot easier to manipulate the shapes and thickness of the rocks I wanted.
Make sure to flatten your rocks out a little to make it easier to write on them later on. |
Once, you have a smooth ball of dough, make circles and flatten them out a little (so you can write on them when they are dry). Place them onto a tray and you can leave them to air dry for a few days (3-4 days) making sure to turn them over at least twice. Or you can place them in the oven, on very low heat for about 2-3 hours.
Once they are dry I wrote the letters on them with a black sharpie, just as I did in the below photo.
Make sure to continue to follow our journey, there are so many more wonderful ways to use these rocks in learning through play invitations!
